Through a little warping of the space/time continuum, any two locations can virtually be right next to another. Gates are large structures that allow instantaneous transition between two points, so if getting to a certain place is your fancy, never mind any scenery, these are the way to go. Fare is cheap or, more commonly, nonexistent, as they are self-automated.

The problem is that the destinations of the gates will be very limited. Uncommonly visited areas won't be accessible as no sane person would put the time and effort to construct a gate to a place no one would go to. However, if you only need to visit a major city or other commonly visited location, gates are the best method to get there.
